Portsmouth Man Faces Serious Charges Following Alleged Carjacking and Assault of Rideshare Driver in Norfolk

A disturbing incident unfolded in Norfolk on March 31, resulting in the arrest of a 24-year-old man from Portsmouth. The individual, identified as Johnathan C. Batey, is now in custody for his alleged involvement in the abduction and sexual assault of a rideshare driver.

The incident transpired near the Pinewood Gardens Apartments on East Little Creek Road, prompting a swift response from Norfolk Police officers. They arrived at the scene following reports of a carjacking involving a rideshare driver. Upon their arrival, they interviewed a courageous woman who had been the victim of this terrifying encounter.

According to a spokesperson from the Norfolk Police Department, the victim reported that her passenger, armed with a gun, had commandeered her vehicle and made threatening demands. Miraculously, the woman managed to escape from the car during the ordeal, at which point the assailant discharged his firearm. Thankfully, the woman remained unharmed and sought assistance, while the suspect fled in her stolen vehicle.

Subsequently, after a thorough investigation, detectives apprehended Johnathan C. Batey on Thursday, April 6. Batey now faces a litany of charges, including abduction, carjacking, rape, attempted malicious wounding, attempted robbery, and use of a firearm. He is presently held without bond at Norfolk City Jail, with a court appearance date yet to be determined.

In response to the incident, a spokesperson for Uber expressed deep concern, stating, “It pains us to hear the horrific details of this case, and our primary concern is helping the driver get the support she deserves. We banned the rider from the platform as soon as this was reported to us and have been in touch with law enforcement throughout their investigation.”

Uber has, in recent years, implemented several safety measures for its drivers, including GPS tracking, access to live help from safety agents, and an emergency button capable of dialing 911.”
